Vaiśampāyana said: There was once a king named Mahābhiṣa. He was born in the Ikṣvāku lineage and was a lord of the earth. He was always truthful and truly valorous.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: एक बार महाभिष नाम का एक राजा था। उनका जन्म इक्ष्वाकु वंश में हुआ था और वे पृथ्वी के स्वामी थे। वह सदैव सत्यवादी और सचमुच वीर थे।
He pleased the lord of the gods through 1000 horse sacrifices and 100 vājapeya sacrifices and thus attained heaven.
उन्होंने 1000 अश्वमेध और 100 वाजपेय यज्ञों द्वारा देवताओं के स्वामी को प्रसन्न किया और इस प्रकार स्वर्ग प्राप्त किया।

ततः कदाचिद्ब्रह्माणमुपासां चक्रिरे सुराः तत्र राजर्षयो आसन्स च राजा महाभिषः
One day, the gods went to pay homage to Brahmā.Many rājarṣi-s and King Mahābhiṣa were also present.
एक दिन, देवता ब्रह्मा को श्रद्धांजलि देने गए। कई राजर्षि और राजा महाभिष भी उपस्थित थे।
Gāṅga, the best of the rivers, also came to pay homage to the grandfather. Her garments, as white as moonlight, were blown away by the wind
नदियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ गंगा भी पितामह को प्रणाम करने आयीं। उसके वस्त्र, चाँदनी की तरह सफ़ेद, हवा से उड़ गए
and immediately the masses of gods lowered their faces. However, rājarṣi Mahābhiṣa continued to stare unabashedly at the river.
और तुरन्त देवताओं की भीड़ ने अपने चेहरे नीचे कर लिये। हालाँकि, राजर्षि महाभिष निडर होकर नदी की ओर देखते रहे।

अपध्यातो भगवता ब्रह्मणा स महाभिषः उक्तश्च जातो मर्त्येषु पुनर्लोकानवाप्स्यसि
Because of this, Mahābhiṣa was cursed by the illustrious Brahmā. "You will be born on earth and then you will again regain these worlds."
इस कारण महाभिष को ब्रह्मा जी ने श्राप दिया था। "आप पृथ्वी पर जन्म लेंगे और फिर इन लोकों को पुनः प्राप्त करेंगे।"

स चिन्तयित्वा नृपतिर्नृपान्सर्वांस्तपोधनान् प्रतीपं रोचयामास पितरं भूरिवर्चसम्
The king then thought about all the kings and ascetics on earth and chose the immensely radiant Prātīpa as his father.
तब राजा ने पृथ्वी पर सभी राजाओं और तपस्वियों के बारे में सोचा और परम तेजस्वी प्रतीप को अपने पिता के रूप में चुना।
On seeing King Mahābhiṣa lose his composure, the best of the rivers went away, thinking about him in her mind.
राजा महाभिष को अपना आपा खोते देख, सर्वश्रेष्ठ नदियाँ मन में उनके बारे में सोचते हुए चली गईं।
Along her path, she saw the divine vasu-s. They were crestfallen and dark with despair at having been dislodged from heaven.
रास्ते में उसने दिव्य वसुओं को देखा। वे स्वर्ग से निकाले जाने की निराशा से हताश और अंधकारमय हो गए थे।
On seeing them in that state, the great river asked, "O residents of heaven! Why are your forms destroyed? Why are you in despair?"
उन्हें उस अवस्था में देखकर महानदी ने पूछा, "हे स्वर्ग के निवासियों! आपके रूप क्यों नष्ट हो गए? आप निराशा में क्यों हैं?"
The divine vasu-s replied, "O great river! We have been severely cursed by the greatsouled Vaśiṣṭha for a minor transgression.
दिव्य वसुओं ने उत्तर दिया, "हे महान नदी! हमें एक छोटे से अपराध के लिए महान आत्मा वशिष्ठ द्वारा गंभीर रूप से शापित किया गया है।

विमूढा हि वयं सर्वे प्रच्छन्नमृषिसत्तमम् संध्यां वसिष्ठमासीनं तमत्यभिसृताः पुरा
Not seen by us, that supreme of riṣi-s was engaged in his twilight rites and in our folly we crossed him.
हमसे नहीं देखा गया, वह परम ऋषि अपने गोधूलि संस्कार में लगे हुए थे और हमने अपनी मूर्खता से उन्हें पार कर लिया।
In his anger, he cursed us that we would be born in a womb. It is not possible to negate what the brāhman-knowing one has said.
उन्होंने क्रोध में आकर हमें श्राप दे दिया कि हम गर्भ से जन्म लेंगे। ब्रह्मज्ञानी ने जो कहा है उसे नकारना संभव नहीं है।
Therefore, become a woman on earth and bear the vasu-s as your sons. We cannot enter the womb of an impure woman."
इसलिए, पृथ्वी पर एक महिला बन जाओ और वसुओं को अपने पुत्रों के रूप में धारण करो। हम किसी अपवित्र स्त्री के गर्भ में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकते।”
Having been thus addressed, Gāṅga agreed and asked, "Which supreme man will be your father?"
इस प्रकार संबोधित करने पर, गंगा सहमत हो गईं और पूछा, "कौन सा परम पुरुष तुम्हारा पिता होगा?"

वसव ऊचुः प्रतीपस्य सुतो राजा शंतनुर्नाम धार्मिकः भविता मानुषे लोके स नः कर्ता भविष्यति
The vasu-s replied: "In the world of men, a son will be born to Prātīpa. He will be King Śāntanu, devoted to dharma, and he will be our father."
वसुओं ने उत्तर दिया: "मनुष्यों की दुनिया में, प्रतीप के एक पुत्र का जन्म होगा। वह राजा शांतनु होगा, जो धर्म के प्रति समर्पित होगा, और वह हमारा पिता होगा।"
Gāṅga said: "O unblemished gods! I was thinking exactly the same. I will do that which brings pleasure to him and also satisfy your wishes."
गंगा ने कहा, "हे निष्कलंक देवताओं! मैं बिल्कुल वैसा ही सोच रही थी। मैं वही करूंगी जिससे उन्हें खुशी हो और आपकी इच्छा भी पूरी हो।"
The vasu-s replied: "O revered one who dwells in the three worlds! You must hurl your sons into the water as soon as they are born, so that we are quickly freed and don't suffer for a long time."
वसुओं ने उत्तर दिया: "हे श्रद्धेय, जो तीनों लोकों में निवास करते हैं! आपको अपने पुत्रों को पैदा होते ही पानी में बहा देना चाहिए, ताकि हम जल्दी से मुक्त हो जाएं और लंबे समय तक पीड़ित न हों।"
Gāṅga said: "I will do what you wish. But so that my union with him is not completely fruitless, let one son remain with him."
गंगा ने कहा: "तुम जो चाहोगे मैं वही करूंगी। लेकिन उनके साथ मेरा मिलन पूरी तरह से निष्फल न हो, इसके लिए एक पुत्र को उनके पास रहने दो।"
The vasu-s replied: "Each one of us will offer one-eighth of our respective energies. From that, a son will be born to you and will live according to your desires.
वसुओं ने उत्तर दिया: "हममें से प्रत्येक अपनी-अपनी ऊर्जा का आठवां हिस्सा अर्पित करेगा। उससे आपके लिए एक पुत्र पैदा होगा और वह आपकी इच्छाओं के अनुसार जीवित रहेगा।

न संपत्स्यति मर्त्येषु पुनस्तस्य तु संततिः तस्मादपुत्रः पुत्रस्ते भविष्यति स वीर्यवान्
But he will have no children on earth. Therefore, this valorous son of yours will remain without a son."
परन्तु पृथ्वी पर उसकी कोई सन्तान न होगी। अत: तुम्हारा यह वीर पुत्र पुत्रहीन ही रहेगा।”

वैशंपायन उवाच एवं ते समयं कृत्वा गङ्गया वसवः सह जग्मुः प्रहृष्टमनसो यथासंकल्पमञ्जसा
Vaiśampāyana said: Making this agreement with Gāṅga, the vasu-s happily went away to the place where they dwelt.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: गंगा के साथ यह समझौता करके, वसु खुशी से उस स्थान पर चले गए जहाँ वे रहते थे।
